Cyclohexanone from Cyclohexanol by Hypochlorite oxidation
Introduction:
The experiment was an oxidation of an alcohol to a ketone. Household bleach was used as a witnesser of sodium hypochlorite that was 5.25 % (0.75 M) aqueous tooth root of sodium hypochlorite; NaOCl (aq), an oxidizing agent to change cyclohexanolinto cyclohexanone. Bleach solution was added to a mixture of cyclohexanol and acetic acid. The yields are known better in acidic rather than introductory conditions. Therefore, acetic acid was used for this experiment. It reacted with the sodium hypochlorite to give hypochlorous acid, which thenreacted with the group O of the alcohol. Steam distillation was used to isolated product, and then was extracted into the distillation with ethyl ether with the addition of dying agent calcium chloride. Finally, the ether was removed to get the product, cyclohexanone with the salt out process. The process of salting out was used to separate cyclohexanone from the aqueous solution to purify the product. Which are weak intermolecular forces (e.g., hydrogen bonds) between entire molecules or nonelectrolytes and water are easily disrupted by the hydration of electrolytes.
