The passions ar just beneath the stagnant surface in Flannery O'connor's stories. In a wry repudiation of the crime of theft, he asserts that 'nobody had nothing I wanted'" (Feeley 74). The Misfit has withdrawn from normal society in order to be self-reliant, and when he does encounter representatives of the society he left behind, he exterminates them without giving the act much thought. He is what this society has made him, and he is now its worst enemy.
