The Chrysanthemums is a story of a wo reality trap by the mundane lifestyle of a farmers wife. This woman is beautiful and has grown discontented with life on the farm, a life missing the romance and appreciation she desires. The chrysanthemums she grows in this story are used as a image to mirror her own plight. Their beauty and propose go neglected by the farmer who sees little serviceable use in them. And Elisa the woman who grows them seems only to be defined by her work. She is trapped in the stifling and unaffectionate atmosphere of Salinas Valley which is described by Steinbeck as a closed pot.
Elisas husband is a working man who doesnt seem to have a great deal age for his wife, doesnt have much time to look upon her as a beautiful woman. Therefore, she hides in her garden dressed in in-effeminate gardening attire. He doesnt seem to have much time for her flowerings either. Rather than commenting on the beauty of the flowers he chooses to support his wifes gardening by suggesting the practical masking of growing apple trees. Illustrating what she perceives as her husbands unfitness to appreciate natural beauty.

Early in their encounter she continues to hide her feminine nature, but he is persistent and finally gains her attention by complementing on her flowers. She feels appreciated as the flowers are appreciated and begins to reveal her desires to the man as she reveals the flowers. The flowers represent her desire for romance her identity as a woman they are delicate and beautiful and she is larger-than-life to be seen this in this way.
She expresses interest in travel, perhaps overleap and finally agrees to pay the man to fix a pot for her after he tells her he will carry a flower with him in his travels.
