One daylight Bruno identifys his servant Maria packing up his stuff. His mother then waked up to his room and said they were pathetic because of his fathers work. Bruno loves where he lives (Berlin) and does not want to move. A week later Bruno, his mother, and his baby Gretel, left for Out- With. Bruno hates the new field of operations and his father for making him move until a few months later, he comes across a fence and finds a male child his age. The boys name is Shmuel. Bruno is jealous of Shmuel because he gets to play with the others boys totally day, and he gets to play in striped pajamas. Bruno then learns Shmuel is confine in there and wants to be let forth. Over the class Bruno visits Shmuel every day after school and talks for a few hours. One day when Bruno was home from school, he build Shmuel in his kitchen polishing glasses. Bruno gave Shmuel food, but when Lieutenant Kotler, a call up general who Bruno despises found out, he beat Shmuel.

That day Shmuel explains how he can not find his father, and that it would be a great adventure for Bruno to come over to help find him. Bruno agrees that tomorrow, before he goes back to Berlin, he will help. The nigh day Bruno quickly got out of the house and ran to the fence.
