The Chrysanthemums, by John Steinbeck, is a short story or so a ranchers wife, enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay, who grows beautiful Chrysanthemums as a federal agency to fulfill things missing in her life. Her marriage is childless, sexless and unhappy. Her husband, total heat, is a man who doesnt really know her and is an inept communicator. However, when a traveling man or tinker visits, he elicits immobile sexual feelings within her. Steinbecks use of symbolism end-to-end the story, Elisas clothes, the fenced garden, the weather, colors, and flowers, shows she wants more from life than what she has but is restrict by social and personal boundaries.
Elisa is first depicted as a strong woman with little femininity, Her mettle was lean and strong⦠and The chrysanthemum stems seemed too small and easy for her energy. Her clothing in the garden even hides her femininity, a big, bulky trick up made up of a black hat, clodhopper shoes, a large corduroy apron and big leather gloves. only her feminine side is brought out in her garden, nurturing the chrysanthemums, caring roughly as if shes their mother. They are part of her. She remains that route through most of the visit with the tinker until her date with Henry later that even out when she ends up crying weakly-like an old woman.
The garden that she works within is fenced for protection from cattle and dogs and chickens but as the story progresses, this fence represents more of a barrier for Elisa. She feels emotionally enclosed in her marriage and the world in widely distributed (Price 1-3).
Her husband shows that he loves her with compliments on her flowers and invites her to dinner and a movie. He even jokes with her as they decide about their evening plans. But later when theyre dressed for dinner and he tells her You present so nice! he gets uncomfortable when Elisa asks him to explain what he means by nice? His repartee is I mean you look different, strong and happy⦠You look strong enough to break a calf oer your knee, happy enough to eat it...If you want to get a full essay, order it on our website: Ordercustompaper.com
