Act One, shaft One of King Lear opens with Kent, Gloucester and Gloucester’s son, Edmund. Gloucester introduced Edmund to Kent as his “whoreson” (I.i.24) or bastard child. King Lear and hence enters with his three daughters and the two eldest’s husbands. Lear asks his daughters to discover him which of them loves him most. Both Goneril and Regan flatter him but his youngest and favored daughter, Cordelia, is honest and tells Lear “Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My flavour into my m turn outh. I love your Majesty / According to my bond, no to a greater extent nor less.” (I.i.100-102). Enraged by this because of his blindness to the truth, Lear cuts Cordelia out of her inheritance. Kent warns Lear that he is do a grave mistake and in turn is banished. Lear then marries off Cordelia to one of her suitors, the King of France, who loves her not for her dowry, but for her frankness and goodness. The scene ends with Goneril and Regan pieces to reduce Lear’s power. In this setting, we learn chop-chop that Lear is very blind to truth, old, and insecurely seeking reassurance of his importance. He cannot tell the difference between true love and flattery.
This blindness comes as a result of sheltered in his role as king and causes his to banish the only two people who in truth do love him and are loyal to him: Kent and Cordelia.
In Scene Two, Edmund delivers a soliloquy addressing his views on society’s positioning toward illegitimate children. While expressing his anger and frustration at injustice, Edmund cries out in his soliloquy: “Now, gods, stand up for bastards!” (I.2.23). He then plots against his brother Edgar, his father’s legitimate son, by present Gloucester a letter he forged from Edgar which tells of a plot to kill their father.
