Allan Pinkerton Biography
Allan was born August 25, 1819 in Gorbals Glasgow, Scotland to William Pinkerton and Isobel McQueen. (Allan Pinkerton.2002) Allans father was a handloom weaver who later worked as a jailer in Glasgow. (Hunt, 2009) When Pinkerton was 10 his father died while on duty. As Allan became elder he learned a trade through apprenticeship, where he became a cooper and made puts for a living. At the age of 23 he became active in the British Chartist Movement. This was a political group called Chartists that believed in temperance, women rights, abolishing slavery, and workers rights to compositionage for better wages (Clifford, 2004). He also met a women bid Joan Carfrae who was a singer and married on March 13, 1842.
In 1843 Pinkerton moved to Dundee Illinois, where he built a cabin 50 miles northwest of Chicago on the Fox River and started his own barrel making business. (Hunt, 2009) One day Allan was looking for wood for his cop when he noticed men doing things illegal so Allen went undercover buying fake money from one individual man that survive to an arrest for counterfeiting.
This was the turning point that changed who Pinkerton would later become.
In 1849 Allan was the first detective for Chicago Police (Clifford, 2004) after one year of working for the police department Allan began working for the U.S. built in bed Office as a mail agent he was responsible for investigating theft on checks and money crops that lead him to arresting the postmaster general and his two nephews. (Hunt, 2009) Pinkerton name grew after he rescued two girls that were kidnapped. (Hunt, 2009)
