In the novel, Wang shows how the title character struggles with the family values of Classical China and compares them with Lilis views of her family, and how they are very different.
In Lili, Wang writes active a young Chinese woman who has been detain for inappropriate behavior. She is sexually active, she drinks alcohol, and hangs out with what the state would consider sturdy influences when it came to her friends. Throughout the novel, Lili introduces her family, and by her description, doesnt have much in common with them. Her parents disagree with her lifestyle and are ashamed. Lili excessively tells about her role in the cultural revolution and her involvement with a revolutionary group that consisted of other young adults much akin her. Aside from her troubles with family and confusion about her role in the world, Lili also tells about Roy, an American journalist who is fascinated by Asian culture.
He traveled to China following the death of his college sweetheart, and meets Lili era traveling with the revolutionary group. It is with Roy that Lili discovers her western side, and struggles with feelings that she doesnt understand. Her parents once once again disapprove of Lilis decisions, as she moves in with Roy out of wedlock, gets pregnant and faces huge challenges with her family that may damage the relationships with those that are her blood beyond repair.
One problem in the novel, is that Lili does not seem to have respect, in the opinion of her parents. Respect for family was a huge virtue to the Chinese.
