When somebody mentions this word you automatically moot of your everyday conventional song and dance, which consists of your stereotypical characters such as your handsome prince, your beautiful princess, your sin villain and your noble hero. Then you get your stereotypical storyline, prince meets princess, they make out in love, villain tries to prevent this, hero defeats villain, then they hump happily ever after. DreamWorks knows this and takes it to a whole bare-ass level, the opposite; Shrek.
Subversion is used throughout Shrek in the plot, setting, characters, euphony and costume. The setting has been significantly subverted in quite a few different ways, for mannequin, when you think of a forest, in which lives an ogre, you would assume it was a deep, dark place where nobody lived to be. That it was the place in which swelled things would happen to anyone that enters.
Well DreamWorks knew this and changes things round a little and do Shreks swap the place where all animals needed to handicap and the place in which good things happen and of which lives the prince of the fairytale. Another example of a subverted setting is the palace, usually on a fairytale the palace is the place were everybody wants to be and where people try to be, until now in Shrek it becomes the total opposite, it becomes a place of darkness and secrets and lies.
