Lesson Plan: Graphic Organizer



Section I: Lesson Plan Background

The strategy that give be employed in this lesson plan will be based on natural organizers to help students organize thoughts and content for comprehension. This idea came from Chapter 3 of reading to Learn in the Content Areas (Richardson, Morgan, & Fleener, 2008) This will be a good learning tool for the students to visually see what they argon learning, how to organize, and give them a study tool for assessments. A K-W-L map is a useful tool for finding out what students already know about the content, what they postulate to know, and what they learned (Heller, 1986; Ogle, 1986).



Section II: Lesson Plan Formatâ€"This lesson is formatted for a blocked class period. It move however be done in two 45 minutes class periods.


This lesson was constructed for 7th grade students studying a Trade Book called Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared To Dream.

I. Goal:
a. Students will understand that there were not always women in the cosmonaut program. There was bias, jealousy and ridicule before they were accepted.

II. Objectives/NM Standards-Benchmarks:
a. Instructional Objective:
i. The student will complete a Venn Diagram, K-W-L and other graphic Organizers that show the similarities/differences of men and women in the space program in the 1960s, that call upon prior knowledge of NASA and the 1960s, and shake off an 85% or above on their exit tag end that includes questions focusing on those similarities and differences. (See Appendix Figures 1, 2, 3)
