William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was the watchword of an alderman. He was the third child of eight and the eldest live son. There is nothing is known of his early life or education. Most biographers agree that Shakespeare was probably educated at the Kings brand-new School in Stratford. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married the 26-year-old Anne Hathaway ,and half dozen months after the marriage Anne gave birth to a female child, Susanna, and Twins, son Hamnet and daughter Judith, followed almost two years later. It is at this point that Shakespeares seven lost years begins. Five years later, he left Stratford for London, leaving his family at home, and had joined a guild of players. Contemporary records of performances show that several of his plays were on the London stage. Shakespeare wrote rafts of plays. He probably worked with Beaumont and Fletcher. Shakespeare wrote with great speed and fluency. He much could not wait for the right word to come and so invented one of his own. He was always aware of his own audience, that mix bag of aristocrats, wits, sailors and soldiers. Ben Jonson wrote about him in the first folio: he was not of an age, but for all time.
